You were in the back seat of an Uber heading home from Warner Center, or you were driving on Ventura Boulevard when a Lyft driver pulled out in front of you. Now an app company, a driver and two or three insurers all say it is someone else's problem. This page explains how rideshare crashes work in Woodland Hills and in California. Coverage changes with what the driver's app was doing when the crash happened, and a wrong guess can cost you real money. You will see the coverage tiers, the evidence you only get early, where to get your police report, which hospitals are close, and the deadlines. Attorney Moe Abdallah takes these cases on contingency and offers a free review at any hour. You pay nothing unless he wins.

Rideshare trips that start and end in Woodland Hills

Woodland Hills is a neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles, at the southwestern edge of the San Fernando Valley, where Ventura Boulevard ends at Valley Circle Boulevard. Riders here get picked up around Warner Center's offices, along Ventura Boulevard's restaurants and shops, and at Kaiser Permanente's Woodland Hills Medical Center on De Soto Avenue. Drivers then merge onto the US-101 Ventura Freeway, or take Topanga Canyon Boulevard (State Route 27), Canoga Avenue, Victory Boulevard or Oxnard Street. Rideshare drivers often glance at a phone for the next pickup, hunt for a curb in a busy lane, or work a long shift on little rest. Those habits show up in crashes: sudden stops to drop off a passenger, door-opening collisions, and left turns across traffic while following a map. We have not found a published crash ranking that singles out a Woodland Hills street, so we will not name a hotspot. We start with your facts: where the driver picked you up, what the app showed, and what happened in the seconds before impact. The trip log often answers the first big question: does the company's insurance apply?

Three insurance phases and the $1 million question

California ties rideshare insurance to what the driver's app was doing. With the app off, the driver is an ordinary motorist, and the driver's own policy applies. California's minimum liability limits for policies issued or renewed since 1/1/2025 are only $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage (Vehicle Code 16056). Once the driver logs on and is waiting for a request, the law requires coverage, held by the driver, the company or both, of at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident for injury and death, plus $30,000 for property damage, and the company must also carry at least $200,000 per occurrence in excess coverage (Public Utilities Code 5433). From the moment the driver accepts a ride until the trip ends, coverage of $1,000,000 for death, injury and property damage applies. That is the number people hear about. It applies only during an accepted trip, and the amounts are minimums that do not cap the company's liability. While the driver is logged on, a personal auto policy need not cover the crash unless it expressly covers rideshare use (Public Utilities Code 5434). So the first question in every Uber case is plain: what phase was the driver in? Moe asks for the answer in writing.

Rideshare car with rear-end damage in Woodland Hills

If you were a passenger, another driver or a pedestrian

Your role in the crash changes your options. A passenger usually has claims against the rideshare driver, the company's coverage and, depending on the facts, the other driver. Since January 1, 2026, SB 371 requires the rideshare company to carry uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage of $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident for passengers, from the time you enter the vehicle until you exit. That coverage comes first and is the company's own obligation. If another car hit your Uber, that driver's policy comes into play and may be thin, so the UM/UIM coverage could matter. If a rideshare driver hit you in your own car, on foot or on a bike, you make a third-party claim against the driver and, when the trip phase applies, the company's policy. Your own UM or UIM coverage may add to the pot. In every version, California's pure comparative negligence rule means partial blame reduces your award instead of ending it (Li v. Yellow Cab Co.). Moe sorts out who is who in the first call, because the right claim goes to the right insurer.

The app records that disappear and the ones you can save today

Rideshare cases come with a paper trail that other crashes lack. The company holds the trip record: when the driver logged on, when the ride was accepted, GPS points, speed data and sometimes in-app messages. It also knows how many hours the driver had been online. The driver's phone may show whether it was in use at the time. Your phone holds your own receipt, pickup screen and route map. Before you do anything else, screenshot the trip, the driver's name and photo, the license plate and the car make and model. Save any email or text the app sends, and do not delete the app. Ask the driver for insurance information and write down the plate number. Some rideshare drivers run dash cameras, and nearby businesses along Ventura Boulevard may have footage that gets overwritten in days. Be careful with the company's claims line. A representative may ask for a statement that sounds routine. The company can use anything you say to reduce what it pays, so let Moe handle it. He sends preservation letters to the company and the driver, and presses for the trip data early.

Police report, hospitals and the courthouse for a Woodland Hills crash

LAPD's Topanga Community Police Station, 21501 Schoenborn St. in Canoga Park, serves Woodland Hills, and traffic matters go to Valley Traffic Division. The front desk is (818) 756-4800. LAPD says to wait at least 45 days after the crash before requesting a traffic report online. If you were hurt, get medical care now. Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center on De Soto Avenue has 24-hour emergency services. UCLA West Valley Medical Center in West Hills has a 24/7 emergency department with a helipad, and Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center is a trauma center. Passengers often hurt their neck, back and head because they never saw the hit coming, and a passenger can suffer a concussion without striking anything. A rideshare lawsuit is filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. Local rules route unlimited injury cases to Stanley Mosk Courthouse downtown, and since November 2024 a motor-vehicle injury pilot has run at the Van Nuys courthouses, so we confirm the correct location before filing. If a City of Los Angeles vehicle was part of the crash, the claim against the city must be presented within six months (Government Code 911.2).

How Moe handles an Uber or Lyft case, and what it costs

Moe Abdallah Law, P.C. handles motor-vehicle injury cases only, including Uber and Lyft crashes. Attorney Moe Abdallah, California State Bar No. 348886, is a Southwestern Law School graduate. He handles cases himself and keeps clients updated by call and text. Free consultations run 24/7, and Se Habla Español. The fee is contingency, so you pay nothing unless he wins. Rideshare insurers know the tiers and the deadlines, and some count on you not knowing them. Moe pins down the trip phase, finds every policy that might apply, and pushes back when one insurer points at another. You have two years to sue for injury (Code of Civil Procedure 335.1) and three years for vehicle and property damage (Code of Civil Procedure 338(c)(1)). Past results do not predict a similar outcome, but Moe has recovered $100,000, the policy limit, in an uninsured motorist claim for a woman rear-ended by a driver who fled, after other firms turned her down. If you were hurt in a rideshare crash, call before you sign any release or accept a quick offer. Moe keeps you updated by call and text as the case moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only if the driver had accepted a ride and the trip was not yet complete. In that phase California requires $1,000,000 in coverage for death, injury and property damage (Public Utilities Code 5433). Before a ride is accepted, the coverage is lower. The trip record decides which tier applies to you.

Possibly several. The at-fault driver's liability policy, the rideshare company's coverage and, since January 1, 2026, the company's uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage of $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident while you are in the car. Which pays first depends on the facts. Moe checks the trip log and every policy in writing before any offer is discussed.

Generally two years from the crash to sue for personal injury (Code of Civil Procedure 335.1), and three years for vehicle damage. If a public entity such as the City of Los Angeles is involved, you must present a written claim within six months. Contact us early so nothing is missed.

You can make a claim against the rideshare driver, and against the company's policy if the trip phase applies. Your own uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may also help. Fault matters, and California reduces awards by your share of blame instead of denying them outright. Moe sorts out which claim goes to which insurer on the first call.

No. You can be polite, share simple facts such as your name, and say a lawyer will follow up. Insurers often use recorded statements to cut a claim. Call Moe at (323) 716-1992 before you speak to any adjuster, and let him handle the contact. Staying quiet is your right, and it protects your claim.
