How we help injured people in Canoga Park

We handle every motor-vehicle injury case type for Canoga Park residents, dealing with the insurers directly while you focus on recovery.

A Valley neighborhood where the main route is a state highway

Canoga Park is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles. The town was annexed in 1917 as Owensmouth and took the Canoga Park name in 1931. Its downtown runs along Sherman Way, and the busiest north-south road is Topanga Canyon Boulevard. That road is state highway SR-27. It links the Ventura Freeway (US-101) to the south with the Ronald Reagan Freeway (SR-118) to the north. No freeway runs through the neighborhood itself, so most crashes here happen on surface streets. Canoga Avenue, Vanowen Street, Saticoy Street and Roscoe Boulevard cross the grid and carry commuters, delivery vans and bus traffic between Warner Center, Chatsworth, Winnetka and West Hills. Surface-street crashes feel different from freeway wrecks. They tend to involve left turns, red lights, driveways and people on foot. The hit can be at 35 miles per hour, and a person in a small car or on a bike still gets badly hurt. If you were hurt in one of these crashes, the street itself matters. Who owns the road, who wrote the report, and which camera faced the intersection can all change what you can prove.

Topanga Canyon Boulevard crashes: two examples from January 2024

We do not rank Canoga Park roads, because no city or state crash count for the neighborhood has been confirmed for this page. What local news has shown is how serious a Topanga Canyon Boulevard crash can be. CBS Los Angeles reported a multi-vehicle crash at about 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2024, in the 7600 block of North Topanga Canyon Boulevard. Two people died at the scene and four were hurt, two of them critically. Lanes were closed near Saticoy Street, and the cause was not immediately known. FOX 11 reported a fatal hit-and-run just before 1:15 a.m. on January 31, 2024, at Vanowen Street. Witnesses described two cars speeding south from Sherman Way in what looked like street racing or road rage. The driver of the Camry died, and the other driver fled. Those reports are examples, not a verdict on the road. Late-night speed, hit-and-run drivers and multi-car pileups are the kinds of cases that need fast evidence work. In April 2024 the Canoga Park Neighborhood Council also shared a Caltrans proposal for bike lanes and other safety changes on Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Mulholland and SR-118.

Car, truck and motorcycle crashes on Canoga Park streets

Most Canoga Park injury claims start the same way. A driver turns left across oncoming traffic on Sherman Way or Vanowen Street. A car runs a red light at Topanga Canyon Boulevard. A delivery truck backs out of a lot. A rider is cut off in a lane change. California follows pure comparative negligence, so you can still recover when an insurer says you share the blame, but your award drops by your percentage of fault (Li v. Yellow Cab Co.). That is why adjusters work so hard to shift blame onto you. A rear-end hit at a Canoga Avenue or Roscoe Boulevard signal can cause neck and back injuries that show up a day or two later. Truck cases can bring more than one party, such as the driver and the company he drives for. Motorcycle riders face helmet and lane-splitting arguments. No California statute bans lane splitting, and riding without a helmet does not bar your claim, though an insurer may argue it made your injuries worse. Moe covers each crash type in his practice pages, and he handles the cases himself. If you were hurt, do not give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer until you have talked to him.

Pedestrians, cyclists and bus riders around Sherman Way and the G Line

Downtown Canoga Park is walkable by Valley standards. People cross Sherman Way and Canoga Avenue to reach shops, restaurants, schools and the LA Metro G Line busway, which has stops at Canoga station on Canoga Avenue and at Sherman Way. LA Metro Bus Line 150 runs along Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard, Line 162 connects at the Sherman Way station, and some late-evening Line 165 trips end at Vanowen Street and Topanga Canyon Boulevard. California drivers must yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk or an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection (Vehicle Code section 21950), and cyclists have the same rights on the road as drivers (Vehicle Code section 21200). Insurers still argue that the walker darted out or the cyclist was hard to see. Bus cases have their own rules. As a common carrier, a bus operator must use the greatest care and diligence to carry riders safely, and a public agency claim carries a six-month notice deadline. Metro has its own claim process, and we do not describe it here. If you were hit on foot, by bike or on a bus, call before the deadline, not after.

Rideshare, drunk-driving and hit-and-run crashes after dark

A late-night crash near Canoga Park often involves a driver who should not have been on the road, or one who left. If an Uber or Lyft driver hits you, coverage depends on what the app was doing. From the moment the driver accepts a ride until the ride ends, at least $1,000,000 in coverage applies. Since January 1, 2026, rideshare uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident while a passenger is in the car (SB 371). If a drunk driver hurt you, the criminal case is separate from your claim, and a felony conviction can extend the time to sue in some cases (Code of Civil Procedure section 340.3). A hit-and-run is harder. If the driver is never found, your own uninsured motorist coverage can pay for your injuries, but the law has strict steps. You must report the crash to police within 24 hours and file a sworn statement with your insurer within 30 days of that report (Insurance Code section 11580.2). One of Moe's results was a $100,000 policy-limit uninsured motorist recovery for a woman rear-ended by a driver who fled, after other firms turned her down. Past results do not predict a similar outcome.

Your police report, where to get treated and which court hears the case

LAPD Topanga Community Police Station, at 21501 Schoenborn Street in Canoga Park, serves Canoga Park, West Hills, Winnetka and Woodland Hills. Its phone is 818-756-4800. LAPD Valley Traffic Division, at 7870 Nollan Place in Panorama City, handles traffic investigations for all Valley Bureau stations. You can request your collision report through LAPD's online report page, but wait at least 45 days after the crash. Reports that involve an arrest, a fatality or a juvenile must be requested by mail. For care, Northridge Hospital Medical Center on Roscoe Boulevard is a Level II trauma center and pediatric trauma center on the LA County list. UCLA West Valley Medical Center in West Hills, formerly West Hills Hospital, has a 24/7 emergency department but is not on the county trauma directory. Go to the nearest emergency room and keep every record. For lawsuits, Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rule 2.3 says a personal injury action must be filed in the district where the incident happened. Canoga Park ZIP codes 91303 and 91304 fall in the Northwest District, whose courthouses are in Van Nuys. The court's filing locator decides the exact courthouse.

Deadlines, city claims and how Moe works a Canoga Park case

You generally have two years from the crash to sue a private driver or company (Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1). Property damage has three years. If a city, county or state agency may be at fault, you must first present a written claim within six months (Government Code section 911.2). For the City of Los Angeles, that means the City Clerk's Claims Department at 200 N. Spring Street, Room 395, or the online claims portal. Faxed and emailed claims are not accepted. Topanga Canyon Boulevard is a Caltrans road, so a road-defect claim there goes through the State, not the City. After a written rejection, you have six months to sue (Government Code section 945.6). Missing a date can end the case. Moe keeps the process plain. He handles the case himself, sends evidence preservation letters, and tracks the insurance limits, since California minimum liability limits are $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident. He updates clients by call and text, and he takes cases on contingency. In one result, an insurer offered $900, and the client ended with $75,000 in total. Past results do not predict a similar outcome.
