Few places in Los Angeles are as crowded on foot as Hollywood. Tourists pack the Walk of Fame, locals cross Highland and Vine on the way to work, and drivers circle for parking on streets never built for this much traffic. When a car hits you here, the driver's insurer usually calls first. It asks for a recorded statement and hints that you stepped out without looking. Moe Abdallah Law, P.C. is a Los Angeles firm that handles motor vehicle injury cases only, and pedestrian cases are a regular part of that work. This page walks through a Hollywood pedestrian crash: who had the right of way, which streets and city agencies matter, what evidence disappears fast, where you get care, and which deadlines can end a claim. Your first call is free, Moe takes it himself, and you pay nothing unless he wins.

Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset and the streets where people get hit

Hollywood is a neighborhood inside the City of Los Angeles, and people walk its main streets all day and most of the night. Its main streets include Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard, Highland Avenue, Vine Street, Cahuenga Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard, Fountain Avenue, Vermont Avenue and Western Avenue. The US-101, the Hollywood Freeway, runs through the neighborhood, and drivers coming off it turn onto these same streets. Two recent crashes show the pattern. On the night of October 4, 2026, a man was killed in a crosswalk crossing Hollywood Boulevard at Cherokee Avenue, and the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to MyNewsLA citing LAPD. On September 1, 2026, two people were hit around 2 a.m. on Sunset Boulevard just east of Bronson Avenue by a driver who left. Those are news reports, not a crash count, and we could not verify any published neighborhood total. They still show you what these streets look like: crosswalks packed with people, drivers in a hurry, and some of them impaired or gone before help arrives. If you were hurt on any of these blocks, the exact spot matters. Write down the cross street while you remember it.

Right of way in a Hollywood crosswalk, and the Freedom to Walk Act

California law favors the person in the crosswalk. Under Vehicle Code 21950, a driver must yield to a pedestrian crossing in any marked crosswalk, and also in an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. A driver approaching a walker must use all due care and slow down as needed. You owe a duty of care too, so you cannot dart into traffic. That duty does not erase the driver's. Even when you are outside a crosswalk, Vehicle Code 21954 says the driver must still use due care for anyone on the road. That matters in Hollywood, where people cross mid-block on Hollywood Boulevard all the time. Since January 1, 2023, the Freedom to Walk Act also bars police from stopping a pedestrian for crossing mid-block between signals unless there is an immediate danger of a collision. That does not make mid-block crossing risk free for a claim. California uses pure comparative negligence, so if an insurer proves you were partly to blame, your award drops by your share instead of going to zero. Expect the adjuster to push your percentage up. Moe answers with witness accounts, video and the driver's own words.

Busy crosswalk where pedestrians cross traffic in Hollywood

Video and witnesses on a street full of cameras and cell phones

Hollywood gives you one advantage after a crash: someone is almost always filming. Storefronts, hotels, parking structures, tour operators and street performers all point cameras at the sidewalk, and tourists record everything. The problem is speed. Business systems often overwrite footage within days, and the tourist who filmed your crash may fly home tomorrow. Moe sends preservation letters and tracks down who owned a camera on the block. He also checks for a driver's dash camera, a bus camera if a Metro or DASH vehicle was nearby, and rideshare trip data if the car was working for an app. You can help too. Photograph the crosswalk, the signal, and any signs or parked cars that blocked your view. Get names and numbers from people who stopped. Ask whether anyone has video and have them send it to you right away. Keep your shoes and clothes as they are. Stay off social media, because adjusters read your posts looking for any hint you were distracted or not hurt.

When the driver left: LAPD Hollywood Division and West Traffic

The LAPD Hollywood Community Police Station at 1358 N. Wilcox Avenue, phone 213-972-2971, covers Hollywood crashes. The station page says traffic and homicide matters go to West Traffic Division, and it links to a form to obtain a traffic collision report. Get a report number at the scene or from the hospital, then request the report as soon as it is available. If the driver fled, report it right away. Leaving the scene of an injury crash is a crime under Vehicle Code 20001, and if police never find the driver, your own uninsured motorist coverage may pay. That coverage has strict rules. The crash must involve physical contact, you must report it within 24 hours, and you must file a sworn statement with your insurer within 30 days. Miss a step and you can lose the claim. Moe's firm has recovered a $100,000 policy limit UM claim for a woman rear-ended by a driver who fled, after other firms turned her down. Every case is different, and past results do not promise a similar outcome. The sooner you call, the sooner someone can chase the video that points to the car.

Claims against the City of Los Angeles: a six month clock

Some Hollywood pedestrian cases involve a public agency. A city truck might hit you. A traffic signal might fail. A tree, sign or overgrown planting might block a driver's view of the crosswalk. Then the rules change. You must present a written claim to the public entity within six months of the injury (Government Code 911.2). For the City of Los Angeles, claims go to the Office of the City Clerk at 200 North Spring Street, Room 395, through its online Claim for Damages portal, by mail or in person. Emailed or faxed claims are not accepted. If the city rejects the claim in writing, you have only six months from that notice to file suit (Government Code 945.6). To win on a dangerous condition of public property, you must prove specific elements under Government Code 835, such as that a city employee created the danger, or that the city knew about it in time to fix it. LADOT says Hollywood Boulevard between Gower Street and Lyman Place has a high number of people killed or severely injured, and it is redesigning that stretch. A project like that can help show the city knew a street was a problem. It will not prove your case by itself.

Care at Hollywood Presbyterian, and how Moe builds the claim

A pedestrian takes the full force of a car. Common injuries are broken legs and pelvises, head and brain injuries, spinal damage, and road burns. CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, at 1300 N. Vermont Avenue at Fountain, has a 24/7 emergency department, and its site lists stroke and heart attack certifications. We could not verify a trauma center designation for it, so paramedics may take a badly hurt patient elsewhere. Go to the ER even if you feel fine. Adrenaline hides pain, and a gap in treatment gives the insurer an argument. From there, Moe works with you directly. He takes your calls himself, updates you by phone and text, and starts on the evidence as soon as you hire him. He collects your medical records and bills, proof of lost income, and the driver's insurance information, then checks every other policy that might apply, including your own. Moe's results include $105,000 for an uninsured client with a broken sternum and $75,000 after an insurer first offered $900. Every case is different, and past results do not promise a similar outcome. The firm works on contingency, so you owe no fee unless he wins. The office is at 527 W 7th St, Ste 924, and Se Habla Español.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually the driver. Vehicle Code 21950 requires drivers to yield to people in marked crosswalks and in unmarked crosswalks at intersections. You also have to use due care, so an insurer may argue you share blame. California lets you recover even if you were partly at fault, but your award shrinks by your percentage.

The LAPD Hollywood Community Police Station, 1358 N. Wilcox Avenue, covers the area, and its page links to a traffic collision report request. Serious crashes go to West Traffic Division. Have your report number ready. Moe's office can help you request it.

Two years from the crash for most cases (Code of Civil Procedure 335.1). If the City of Los Angeles or another public entity may be responsible, you must file a written claim within six months. Waiting is the most common way people lose a valid case.

Report it right away. Under Insurance Code 11580.2, UM coverage for a hit-and-run requires physical contact, a police report within 24 hours, and a sworn statement to your insurer within 30 days. Moe can help you meet those steps and search for video that identifies the car.

Possibly. Drivers still owe you due care outside a crosswalk under Vehicle Code 21954. The insurer will blame you, and your share of fault lowers your payment, but it does not end your claim. Tell Moe exactly where you were and what you saw.

Not before you talk to a lawyer. Adjusters ask for recorded statements early and use your words to raise your share of the blame. Give simple facts to the police and your own insurer. Send everything else to Moe at (323) 716-1992.
