If a semi hit you on the 710, the 405, or a street near the harbor, you already know a truck crash is not a car crash with a bigger bumper. The injuries are worse. The policies are bigger. The carrier's side starts building its defense before you leave the hospital. Moe Abdallah Law, P.C. is a Los Angeles motor-vehicle injury firm, and attorney Moe Abdallah handles Long Beach truck cases himself. We move on black-box data and driver logs fast, and we name every company that put that rig on the road. Many Long Beach truck wrecks involve more than one company, and each has its own lawyer and its own insurer. We find every responsible party and every policy. Then the people who caused your crash pay for your care, your lost paychecks, and the future you now have to plan around. The free consultation is open around the clock, and we speak Spanish.

Where big rigs and Long Beach drivers share the same lanes

Long Beach shares its harbor with the Port of Los Angeles, so freight is part of daily life here. The I-710, the Long Beach Freeway, is the most direct route between that port complex and the railyards in Vernon and East Los Angeles, and growing cargo volumes at the two ports have added a large amount of truck traffic to it. From there, rigs fan out across the I-405, the I-605, SR-91, and SR-22. Deliveries also put trucks on city streets shared with cars, people on foot, and Long Beach Transit buses. Think about what that mix means for you. A loaded tractor-trailer needs far more road to stop than your car does. A rear-end hit, a wide right turn, or a lane change into your door can happen in a second. We do not call a road a hotspot without proof, so here is what the public record shows. Residents raised safety concerns about Orange Avenue between Seventh Street and Hellman Avenue in the Long Beach Post's coverage of the city's 2025 traffic deaths. California's Office of Traffic Safety ranked Long Beach first among 15 comparable cities in 2023 for total fatal and injury crash victims, and first for fatal and injury crashes between 9pm and 3am. The city also recorded 53 fatal traffic collisions in 2025, its most in more than a decade. When a truck is involved, we start by pinning down where the rig was headed, what it hauled, and who dispatched it.

Federal trucking rules decide a lot of these cases

A trucking company does not run on the honor system. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations set limits a car driver never faces. Under 49 CFR 395.3, a property-carrying driver may spend no more than 11 hours behind the wheel within a 14-hour on-duty window, and only after 10 consecutive hours off duty. The driver also needs a 30-minute break after 8 hours of driving, and the weekly cap is 60 hours in 7 days or 70 hours in 8. Drivers log their time, and most use an electronic logging device that records it. Other federal rules cover brake upkeep, driver qualification files, drug and alcohol testing, and how cargo is loaded and tied down. After a Long Beach crash, we compare what the driver logged against what the truck's own data shows. A tired driver on the 710 or the 405 puts everyone near that rig at risk. A broken rule does not win a case alone, but it can show why the driver or the company was careless. It also gets you records the carrier would rather keep private, from dispatch messages and inspection reports to training files and prior complaints. We chase that paper trail from day one, because log violations are a common sign of fatigue.

The proof lives in the truck, and it can vanish within days

After a Long Beach truck crash, the strongest proof is not on the pavement. It sits in the truck's electronic control module, often called the black box, which can record speed, braking, and throttle in the seconds before impact. It sits in the driver's logging device and the dispatch system. It sits in dash camera video, shop records, and cell phone data. Once the rig is back on the road, the carrier can overwrite or toss much of it in the normal course of business. A large carrier may send its own investigators to the scene within hours. We move first. When you hire us, we send a written preservation demand to the driver and the carrier, ordering them to keep the truck, its data, and its records. We also ask for the driver's qualification file and the truck's inspection and repair history. Federal rules also require the carrier to test a driver after certain crashes, with alcohol tests due within 8 hours and drug tests within 32 hours under 49 CFR 382.303, and we ask whether those tests happened. We pull the police report, look for city or business cameras near the crash, and find witnesses before memories fade. If you can do it safely, photograph the truck, the company name on the door, the USDOT number, and the plate.

Who owes you money after a wreck near the harbor

Do not assume the driver is the only one to blame. A truck crash in Long Beach can involve the driver, the motor carrier that hired and dispatched him, a freight broker that arranged the load, the company that owns the trailer or leases the tractor, a shop that skipped a brake repair, or a loading crew that stacked cargo badly. Some truck drivers work as independent contractors, and carriers like to point at that label. We look at who actually controlled the schedule, the route, and the equipment. Each defendant brings its own insurance. Naming the right ones can open policies far larger than any car crash does. Federal rules set a minimum level of financial responsibility for freight carriers, and for an interstate for-hire carrier hauling ordinary non-hazardous freight in a truck of 10,001 pounds or more, that minimum is $750,000 under 49 CFR 387.9. Many carry more. California's Proposition 51 also matters here, because each defendant answers for pain and suffering only in proportion to its own fault, so every responsible company needs to be named. If a city truck or other public vehicle hit you, a different clock runs. A claim against the City of Long Beach for injury must reach the City Clerk within six months under Government Code 911.2. Crashes on state highways can point to Caltrans, and we sort out which agency applies.

Long Beach police reports, courts, and where your case is heard

The Long Beach Police Department writes the collision report for crashes on city streets. It is not LAPD and it is not the Sheriff. You can request the report by mailing the department's application, with a copy of photo ID, to 400 W. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802, ATTN: Information Management Division. The fee is $30, and the department says processing can take up to about six months. Law offices and insurers can ask about status at PD-RequestStatus@longbeach.gov, so we ask early and keep following up. The California Highway Patrol handles crashes on freeways like the 710 and the 405, even inside city limits, so we work out which agency holds your file. If anyone was hurt or property damage tops $1,000, you also have 10 days to send the DMV an SR-1. A Long Beach case can be filed at the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse, 275 Magnolia Ave., in Los Angeles Superior Court. The right venue depends on where the defendants are based and where the crash happened. We pick the court based on the carrier's address and the evidence. Property damage to your vehicle has its own three-year limit under Code of Civil Procedure 338, separate from the two years you get for injuries.

Truck injuries, local trauma care, and how Moe runs your case

Truck crashes cause the injuries that change a life: traumatic brain injury, spinal cord damage, crush injuries, burns, broken pelvises, amputations, and death. If you were hurt in Long Beach, you may have been taken to MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center or St. Mary Medical Center, both Level II trauma centers. Those records matter, and so do your follow-up visits, therapy, and any later surgery your doctors recommend. Insurers look for gaps in treatment, so keep every appointment and tell your doctors about every symptom. Moe handles the case himself and updates you by call and text, so you never get passed to a call center. We collect your medical records and bills, work out your lost income, and build the claim around what you will need years from now, not just this month. We have recovered policy-limit results for clients in other motor-vehicle cases, including $100,000 on a UM claim after other firms turned the client down, though past results do not predict a similar outcome. We take truck cases on contingency. If we do not win, you owe no fee, and you can reach us any hour at (323) 716-1992.

Frequently Asked Questions

The proof can disappear fast. The truck's black-box data, the driver's logs, and the carrier's dispatch and maintenance records can be overwritten once the rig goes back to work. The carrier's insurer may also call you within hours. Call us before you give a statement. We send preservation letters at once and keep the insurer away from you.

For a crash on a city street, ask the Long Beach Police Department. Mail its application with a copy of your photo ID to 400 W. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802, ATTN: Information Management Division. The fee is $30. CHP usually handles a freeway crash instead. Tell us the date and place, and we will track down the right agency.

More than the driver. Depending on the facts, the trucking company, a freight broker, a trailer owner, a repair shop, or a cargo loader may share blame. Each has its own insurance. Truck policies run larger than car policies, and one insurer may point at another to avoid paying you. So we find every responsible party.

You generally have two years from the crash date to sue under Code of Civil Procedure 335.1. If a government vehicle or public entity is involved, such as a city truck, you must present a written claim within six months under Government Code 911.2. After a written rejection, you have six months to sue. Do not wait. Call us now.

Yes. California follows pure comparative negligence under Li v. Yellow Cab Co., so your award shrinks by your share of fault instead of being barred. Truck insurers often inflate your share. We push back with the truck's data, the driver's logs, and witness accounts. Do not let an adjuster talk you into taking the blame.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration sets rules for hours of service, logging devices, maintenance, driver qualification, drug and alcohol testing, and cargo securement. Most property-carrying drivers face an 11-hour driving limit inside a 14-hour on-duty window. A broken rule can help show the driver or company was careless, and it gives us records to request.

Not before you talk to us. Early offers arrive before anyone knows the full cost of your injuries and future care. Once you sign a release, the claim is over, even if your condition gets worse. We review any offer for free and tell you how it compares with what your case may be worth.

Nothing up front. Moe Abdallah Law, P.C. works on contingency, so you owe no fee unless we win your case. The consultation is free, and you can reach us 24/7 at (323) 716-1992. We handle the carrier's calls, gather the evidence, and keep you updated while you focus on getting better.
